How much wood does an off grid wood gasifier use?
Our off grid wood gasifier kits come in two sizes. The Mini G is optimized to run a home generator (of any size) so we will discuss that one first.
1 cu ft of wood bio char is needed per 1 hour of generator run time (at 50% load). A full bush cord of wood is about 128 cu ft of wood. With our off grid wood gasifier kit includes an enclosed bio char kiln. Our kiln efficiently converts wood to bio char with minimal losses - your observed volume yields are about 80% of the original wood volume.
1 cord of wood = 100 hours of generator usage (which is equivalent to about 75 gallons of gasoline).
Our CES Mini-G off grid wood gasifier kit will run a generator for 102 hours for each cord of wood used.
Our Mega-G wood gasifier kit is 2x the size and can run up to a 4.9l V8. This wood gasifier will yield about 1 mile per pound of wood. If an average cord of dry wood weights 3,000 lbs. Then you can count on driving 3,000 miles on that cord of wood (Note: variety of wood will change the weight assumption).
If you drive 15,000 miles per year - you would need 5 cords of wood for your driving needs.
In another blog post we will discuss the economics of using an off grid wood gasifier kit both for running a generator and driving a pickup truck. Stay Tuned!
